Hello Friends! Here Junior the Purple Tapir reporting from Lima, Peru:
The Lowland Tapir, also called the South American Tapir is a large animal with a cylinder like body and an elongated head that ends on a small proboscis. A proboscis is a prehensile snout, like the elephant’s trunk but much shorter. Tapirs use the prehensile snout to pick up the leaves, fruits, roots and shoots they eat.
This is cousin Elena, who lives in the Lima Zoo. If you look carefully, you will see she has a very short tail. She has a very good sense of smell and hears very well. She is also very cautious during the day and walks tapir made paths during the night to go to her feeding areas. Like all tapirs, she is an excellent swimmer.
Next, I will talk about a day in the life of a lowland tapir!
¡Hola amigos!
